John Limanek has been in public accounting for over 20 years and received his CPA license in 1981. He initially worked at Peat, Marwick, a Big 6 accounting firm, in Providence, Rhode Island. He subsequently moved to California where he worked with William A. Becker, CPA, P.C., a Los Angeles CPA firm. Upon returning to Vermont, John joined Smith, Batchelder and Rugg, a regional CPA firm. Subsequently, he entered into an association with Claude Schwesig and Herrick, Ltd., becoming a co-owner in 1987. At that time he was also involved with a start-up company, which developed prototype machinery to be used in the plastics recycling industry.
A considerable portion of John’s practice is now with clients in real estate development, including foreign owned U.S. investments. Other areas of practice include consulting for business start-ups, acquisitions and dispositions, financial statement compilation and review services, and tax planning for individuals, corporations, partnerships, estates and trusts. John is also experienced with auditing manufacturers, retailers, municipalities, insurance companies, pensions and banks, as well as developing internal control and cost accounting systems and analyzing tax shelters and investments.
John first became a Vermont resident in 1967. He studied foreign affairs at Georgetown University, studio art at California State University at Northridge, and business administration at the University of Vermont. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Russia, Africa and the Middle East. John has taught part-time at Trinity College, The New England Culinary Institute, and the Church Street Center. He currently resides in Charlotte with his wife Laurie and their two sons. John enjoys rock climbing, tennis, basketball, skiing and snowboarding, biking, windsurfing, and sailing. For many years John coached for Shelburne Recreation Department’s soccer, basketball and baseball leagues. John served on the board of the Chittenden County Transportation Authority, was Treasurer of the Burlington Tennis Club, and served on the Rice Memorial High School Investment Committee. John is a member of the Vermont Society of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
